Steven R. Gerbel, Founder & President

Steven Gerbel has over 15 years of experience running hedge funds focused on merger and convertible arbitrage markets. Prior to founding Chicago Capital Management, Mr. Gerbel was a General Partner at First Capital Alliance, a hedge fund located in Chicago, primarily focused on merger and convertible arbitrage transactions, value investing and distressed markets. Mr. Gerbel began his career trading commodities on the Mid-American Commodities Exchange at the Chicago Board of Trade and acting as a "local" engaged in trading U.S. Treasury Bond futures for his own account. Mr. Gerbel has also helped in founding two de novo banks in the Chicago area and six hedge funds and other businesses, in addition to Chicago Capital Management. Mr. Gerbel holds a FINRA Series 7 Securities License and is registered with the Chicago Stock Exchange and FINRA. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.

Jeffrey A. Newman, Senior Managing Director

Jeffrey Newman has over 20 years of trading experience, primarily focusing on merger arbitrage situations. Prior to joining the Firm in 2005, Mr. Newman was a Partner at NEWVON Asset Management, which was involved in all aspects of arbitrage investing. Prior to that, Mr. Newman was a market-maker on the Chicago Board Options Exchange for 10 years. He holds FINRA Series 7, 55 and 63 securities licenses.

Mark K. DeRolf, Chief Administration Officer

Mark DeRolf has more than 25 years of experience in the financial markets industry. He began his career as an auditor for the Chicago Board of Trade and has significant experience managing treasury, finance and back-office functions across a diverse group of financial institutions. Prior to joining Chicago Capital Management, Mr. DeRolf was the CFO and Compliance Officer for an online brokerage firm. Mr. DeRolf graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He currently holds FINRA Series 7, 27 and NFA Series 3 licenses.

Richard C. Vogel, Chief Financial Officer

Richard Vogel has over 15 years of experience in financial analysis and management in the securities industry and private equity markets. He has served Chicago Capital Management since the Firm's inception and has counseled many financial firms and members of the CBOE, CHX, FINRA, DTC and NSCC on the structuring of their operations and capital. Mr. Vogel is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a FINRA Series 27 securities license. He graduated with a Bachelors of Accounting with Honors from Graham School of Management at Saint Xavier University.

James A Casselberry, Managing Director

James Casselberry has over 25 years in the investment management and investment consulting industry. Most recently he has headed Dearborn Park Group, LLC, a firm that offers strategic consulting for investment management and financial services firms. Representative client list: The Northern Trust Company, Dorchester Capital, Hughes Capital Management, Chicago Capital Management, A&A Hospitality, and Keel Asset Management.


Previously, Mr. Casselberry was a principal at Ennis Knupp and Associates; he served as the primary consultant and managed consulting assignments for a number of EnnisKnupp’s retainer and project clients. Mr. Casselberry served as leader of Ennis Knupp’s Emerging Manager Advisory Council and was a member of the firm’s global equity research group, private equity research group, as well as the fixed income advisory council.


Some of Mr. Casselberry’s achievements include:


  • Co-managed the continuing asset allocation structure and strategic plan for a large foundation
  • Authored research papers on the role of private equity funds for institutional investors
  • Developed internal investment committees to review investment policy and performance for multiple large public agencies
  • Established a revised investment policy for several large public and private agencies
  • Responsible for setting all investment strategy and allocation for an investment capital management firm managing more than $1 billion in assets

Prior to joining EnnisKnupp in 2004, Mr. Casselberry was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Trias Capital Management. He served as the Chief Operating Officer for Wedgewood Capital Management, Inc. Mr. Casselberry served as director at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in the investment group. Earlier, Mr. Casselberry held positions at First Chicago and Arthur D. Little Valuations.


Mr. Casselberry holds a B.S. degree in economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an M.B.A. degree from the University of Chicago.

John Lewis, Director

John Lewis joined DMTC Group Limited (“DMTC”) as a partner in July 2008 where his primary focus is DMTC’s Cayman regulated subsidiary, DirectorsPlus Limited. Mr. Lewis joined DMTC after six years with Butterfield Fund Services where he held the role of Managing Director in Cayman and Regional Head of the Americas. Previously he spent two years as Vice President of Fund Accounting with the Bank of New York in Manhattan and eight years with Ethical Funds Administration in Vancouver, Canada where he departed with the title of General Manager and Assistant Vice President. Prior to that, Mr. Lewis spent six years in public practice with Price Waterhouse and Deloitte & Touche in Johannesburg, London and Vancouver.


Mr. Lewis holds a BSc(Hons) in Accounting from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Simon Fraser University in Canada. In addition to holding the Chartered Accountant designation in Canada, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is the Chairman of the Cayman Islands Fund Administrators Association and sits on the Council of the Cayman Islands Society of Professional Accountants.

William Jones, Director

William Jones co-founded DMTC and its affiliated businesses in Cayman, Luxembourg and Singapore in January 2007. Mr. Jones is Managing Director of ManagementPlus (Luxembourg) S.A. Prior to establishing the predecessors of DMTC in April 2006, he spent one year providing consulting services to international clients in the alternative investments industry. From 2002 to 2005, he was Head of Legal Compliance and Risk at Bank of Bermuda Limited and then Head of Legal of HSBC Securities Services when HSBC acquired Bank of Bermuda. From 2000 to 2002, he was a partner at Agora Capital Management, a multi-manager specialist in alternative investments. From 1997 to 2000, he was Head of Legal at Goldman Sachs Asset Management International (“GSAMI”) in London with responsibility for all GSAMI matters ex-US and ex-Japan. He was promoted to this role after Goldman Sachs acquired Commodities Corporation, where he spent seven years as a vice president in the legal department. Mr. Jones started his career in 1988 as a lawyer at Shearman and Sterling and then at Schulte Roth and Zabel.


Mr. Jones holds an A.B. in Comparative Literature (1984) from Princeton University. He also holds a Juris Doctor and a Masters in Business Administration (1988) from Columbia University.
